On Friday, Buddhadev Bhattacharya’s last journey will begin, marking a solemn farewell to the late former chief minister. His remains, initially buried at Peace World on Thursday, are scheduled to be removed on Friday at 10:30 a.m. The final journey will then proceed to the West Bengal State Assembly, where the body will be presented between 11 and 11:30 a.m. By noon, his body will be taken to the CPM State Office on Alimuddin Street, where it will stay until 3 p.m.
Following this, Buddhadev Bhattacharya’s last journey will continue to Dinesh Majumdar Bhavan, a place of significance in his political career. As the founding secretary of the Provincial Youth Organization in the CPM student and youth wing, this building holds a deep connection to his work and comradeship with Dinesh Majumder, after whom the building is named. The body will remain there until quarter to four.
The journey will culminate at Sealdah’s NRS Hospital, where Buddhadev Bhattacharya‘s body will be donated for future medical studies, following in the footsteps of his predecessor, former Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, whose body was similarly donated in January 2010.

On Thursday, the cornea was removed from Buddhadev Bhattacharya’s eyes as part of a scheduled procedure before his body was taken to Peace World. Initially, the Assembly was not included in the route for Buddhadev Bhattacharya’s last journey. However, following a request from Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee and a visit from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to Palm Avenue, the CPM leadership decided to include the Assembly in the route. This decision allows MLAs, including those from the ruling party and the opposition, to pay their final respects to the former chief minister.
On Friday morning, CPM leaders from across India, including Prakash Karat, Brinda Karat, MA Babyra, and Manik Sarkar, will gather in Kolkata for Buddhadev Bhattacharya’s last journey. However, CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury will not attend due to a recent cataract surgery, though he expressed his desire to be present. He has been advised to attend Buddhadev’s memorial service later this month instead.
